What Is PVD?

Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) is an advanced vacuum-coating process that adds a thin, durable layer of metal compounds onto stainless steel.
Unlike paint or electroplating, PVD doesn’t rely on liquids or chemicals. Instead, it uses physical energy in a vacuum chamber to deposit vaporized metal atoms — such as titanium, zirconium, or chromium — directly onto the stainless steel surface.

The result is a film that’s microscopically thin (0.1–1.0 microns) yet exceptionally tough. This ultra-thin layer enhances appearance and durability without hiding the underlying texture — so whether you start with a mirror, brushed, or embossed stainless finish, that look remains visible beneath the color.

How the PVD Process Works

Here’s a simplified look at how PVD coatings are applied to stainless steel sheets:

1. Preparation and Cleaning
   The stainless sheets are cleaned to remove oils, fingerprints, and oxides. Any surface contaminants can affect coating adhesion, so this step is critical.
2. Vacuum Chamber Loading
   Clean sheets are placed inside a large vacuum chamber, where the air is removed to create a controlled environment free of dust and moisture.
3. Vaporization of Metal Target
   Inside the chamber, a “target” metal — often titanium, zirconium, or chromium — is heated or bombarded by plasma until its atoms vaporize.
4. Deposition on Stainless Steel
   The vaporized metal atoms travel through the vacuum and condense on the stainless surface. Reactive gases such as nitrogen, carbon, or oxygen are introduced to form metal nitrides or oxides (like TiN or ZrN), which produce a range of colors — from gold and rose to black and bronze.
5. Cooling and Finishing
   Once coating is complete, the sheets are cooled and inspected for color consistency, adhesion, and thickness. The finished result is a vivid, uniform color that bonds at the molecular level with the stainless substrate.
